Taking leaves from work is essential in keeping a good work-life balance. When the situation calls for us to take some time off work, having paid leaves available gives us assurance that we can take care of ourselves and our family without compromising financial stability.
Fortunately for Oregon employees, the state has issued the “Paid Leave Oregon” program to allow workers to have the time and support they need to accomplish this.
Meeting the Requirements
As long as you are an employee in Oregon, regardless of whether you are working full-time, part-time or seasonally, who has made at least $1,000 the year before applying for paid leave, you are eligible under the program. However, if you are self-employed, an independent contractor or a tribal government employee, your coverage is not automatic.
Taking the Leave
Even though you meet the requirements, you can only take leaves under this program for specific reasons. This includes the following situations:
- Being with family: Balancing your time between work and family is one of the main and common reasons for taking this leave. If you just gave birth or recently adopted a child, you can take this leave. This also applies when you have to care for a family member with a serious health condition.
- Recovering from illness: In instances when you are the one suffering from a serious health concern, you can take your paid time off under this program.
- Prioritizing safety: If you are a victim of domestic violence, sexual assault or any threats to your safety, you can apply for this benefit.
This is a fairly new program, so you might not be as familiar with its benefits and other details. You may even be confused with the program’s difference from the Oregon Family Leave Act.
Nonetheless, it is your right, as long as you are eligible, to have your employer implement your benefits according to the law.
